Higher Ed Innovators to Convene in Cambridge for the 2014 Breakthrough Models Academy

What are you doing this summer?  The NGLC staff and I are getting together with 40+ higher education innovators for the NGLC Breakthrough Models Academy July 13-18, Cambridge, Mass. What a diverse group of innovative leaders and rising stars we have with this new cohort!

Our group includes an equal number of men and women from an almost equally balanced number of public and private institutions (the publics are a little ahead at 60%).

The issues they want to tackle include:

  • competency-based education models
  • alternative business models and affordability
  • student retention/completion
  • accessibility
  • faculty roles/faculty development
  • preparing students for work in a global economy

The Academy will provide exposure to a wide variety of programming that helps participants look at these issues through new lenses like design thinking—a creative, user-centered approach to problem solving pioneered by IDEO and the service blue-printing process

Working in teams of four or five, Academy participants will spend the week framing their ideas for breakthrough models in Cambridge, and then head home to continue working remotely with the support of professional coaches. Once model plans are fully fleshed out, they’ll be evaluated by the Academy and other education innovators. The cream of the crop will be presented at the 2015 EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative Annual Meeting in Anaheim, Calif., on February 9-11 to inspire the teaching and learning community with new views of the future.

It’s never too early to start planning summer vacation – just ask my eleven-year-old!  If you’d like to be notified when the 2015 Academy application process opens, send us a note here and we’ll put you on our list.
