Hallmark Feature: Self-paced pathways, supporting students who need catching up in 9th grade

This redesign effort will use differentiated and competency-based instructional strategies to create clear and extended pathways for students to advance and progress at their own pace (and especially meet the needs of students who may need more time or catching up upon entering high school).

  • E. L. Haynes will design and implement a 9th grade “red shirt” remediation to attend to the unique needs of entering students who need additional time and supports and a 12th grade “college access academy” for student to accelerate into college culture and self directed environments.
  • Staff will shift their role from content delivery to individual and group coaching through blended instruction (station-rotation model in 9th and a low-touch flex model in 12th).
  • The team will develop the Capital Teaching Residency Program to address issues of instructional practice and smaller staff to student ratios.
