Mass IDEAS was an initiative launched in 2017 by Next Generation Learning Challenges (NGLC) with generous support from the Barr Foundation and Nellie Mae Education Foundation. Mass IDEAS grants and professional learning opportunities concluded in 2021.

Helping you design the great schools our kids deserve.

Every person is unique and deserves a pathway to success. As educators, families, students, community leaders, businesses, and others who care about the future of learning in communities across Massachusetts, we know we can do more to help our kids succeed. That’s why Mass IDEAS was created.

Innovative, High-Quality Schools

If you have a new idea that can help shape or improve a school, you’re not alone. Mass IDEAS brought people together to learn from each other, share ideas, and turn big ideas into great schools. We focused on helping the people of Massachusetts reimagine public schools and design and launch innovative, high-quality school models for their communities. See the faq page to learn more about our design principles, the school characteristics that we supported.

A Personalized, Collaborative Approach to Redesign School

We did this work through a range of supports, which included School Design Institutes where participants explored the why behind new learning models, the ins and outs of design thinking, and then used these design muscles to start prototyping solutions tailored to their communities. We also provided funding opportunities for groups of stakeholders to further plan and implement new schools and redesign existing ones. Our approach worked hard to build on and connect with the promising work already underway by other initiatives in communities across the state. Learn more about our grants + supports.

All Massachusetts students deserve great schools.
