Next Gen Assessment

bulletpoint2_0.PNGNext gen assessment /  Measure a range of cognitive skills, social-emotional development, and deeper learning, and give students and their instructors actionable feedback to help them continue to grow and learn.

It’s been said that we value what we measure. Therefore, next generation learning—which values more personalized, self-paced, mastery-based approaches—requires new approaches to assessment. Rather than multiple-choice bubble response forms that drive “teach to the test” or “bell curve” mindsets, next gen assessments have the potential to transform what and how students learn.

In contrast to backward-looking assessments of learning, next gen assessments are integral to the learning process—in other words, they are assessments for learning.

Schools are utilizing performance-based assessments, especially in project-based and experiential learning environments, to gather richer and more varied evidence of learning. Pre-tests at the start of competency modules help direct students to the content they need to focus on and adaptive assessments tailor the testing process to a student’s current level. Formative assessments embed feedback more deeply into the learning process, guide future instructional decisions, and help students direct their own learning.

The Assessment for Learning Project grant program aims directly at rethinking the core role that assessment can play to support student attainment of deeper learning.

Resources to Support Next Gen Assessment in Your School

We recognize that all schools are as unique as the students that inhabit them, and not all educators are at the same place in their shift to next gen assessment. So, whether you’re just starting to explore next gen assessment and looking for inspiration, or implementing models in your classroom and seeking out specific solutions to common challenges, or refining existing approaches and wondering “what comes next,” NGLC has a variety of resources available to support your efforts.
