Deeper Learning

Deeper Learning with MEIBL

NGLC explores opportunities to engage students in deeper learning, which the Hewlett Foundation defines as including:

  • Mastery of core academic content
  • Critical thinking and problem solving
  • Collaboration
  • Effective communication
  • Self-directed learning
  • An academic mindset, or a strong believe in oneself

When students are engaged across these six competencies at the same time, their learning is more efficient and more effective.

NGLC grant recipients are investing in proven pedagogies that promote deeper learning and they are experimenting with technologies that can support the effort. When adaptive assessments and competency dashboards visually show students and their instructors their individual progress, students can take ownership of their own learning and know when extra support is needed. Digital content can also enable self-directed learning, often around mastery of core academic content. And when deployed in blended learning environments, the use of digital content can enable teachers and instructors to facilitate learning experiences that require critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and communication.
